The Lewisburg Area School District board approved installation of a refrigerated 'spirit box' vending machine intended to give students access to healthier grab‑and‑go items after the school day.
"One of the issues that was identified from students was that there was not any food available right after school," Speaker 1 said during the discussion about after‑school access for students who stay for practices or clubs. Administration representatives described a token system, cash and card payments, and a plan for food service to manage stocking so items would be fresh at the end of the day. Speaker 18 told trustees roughly $6,000 of initial funding would come from the GDF (lifting of Lewisburg farms) as a buffer while food service operates the machine.
Board members pressed for allergen visibility and discussed whether the machine would run only after the school day to avoid replacing standard meal service. The program includes an educational/entrepreneurial component that administrators said could be shared with the district's entrepreneurial classes.
The motion to approve the vending machine passed on a roll call. Trustees said the intent is to operate the machine in a cost‑neutral manner and to use any modest revenue for student incentives or district programs.
"It'll be fresh," Speaker 17 said, describing how food‑service staff could prepare items to stock the refrigerated unit at day’s end.
Next steps include finalizing the token distribution method and establishing operations with the food‑service department so the service launches after construction and procurement are complete.
