Board approves program-of-studies updates, adds required personal finance credit

The Northwestern Lehigh School District board approved updates to next year’s high school Program of Studies that change course offerings, add a required personal finance credit, and formalize GPA multipliers.

Administrators presented an eight‑page summary of curricular revisions. In art, the district will remove several 2D/3D course identifiers and add a new Introduction to World Art course and a consolidated studio art offering so advanced students can take the studio course multiple times and have it reflected on transcripts. Family and Consumer Sciences will rename one course to “Training and Teaching for Any Career,” a course developed locally to broaden participation beyond future educators.

The presenters said the changes respond in part to a Pennsylvania Department of Education requirement that beginning with the class of 2027 every student complete a personal financial literacy course. To meet that mandate, the district will offer (1) a one‑semester personal finance course aimed at seniors and delivered as a hybrid/college‑style schedule and (2) a financial mathematics option that integrates personal finance with algebra/geometry/statistics to serve students who take vocational coursework at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI). Administrators said they are working to have teachers recognized as adjuncts with local postsecondary partners and to produce an online offering in the future.

The meeting record also shows the board adopted updated language on GPA multipliers (no substantive weighting change for current students; the administrative team will apply accelerated/honors multipliers internally while phasing in new language for incoming freshmen). Board members asked clarifying questions about scheduling for students who attend LCTI and the timeline for rolling out the new requirements; administrators said scheduling begins in January.

The board approved the item by voice vote.
