The Criminal Justice Commission asked the Joint Committee on Ways and Means Public Safety Subcommittee on Feb. 5 for permission to apply for a Bureau of Justice Statistics State Justice Statistics Program (SJS) grant of up to $226,578 to support research into recidivism and treatment-court outcomes.
Kelly Officer, research director at the Criminal Justice Commission, told the subcommittee the competitive grant funds would be used to enhance data sources and analytical capacity. Officer said the request would fund parts of several positions94a portion of her role, a larger share of a senior research analyst, and a research analyst 2 to support grant-related activities. Officer said no state match is required and the application deadline is March 3.
The request drew no objections from the committee. Allison Daniel of the Department of Administrative Services Chief Financial Office and a Legislative Fiscal Office representative recommended approval. A committee member moved to send the request to the full committee with the LFO recommendation; the motion carried unanimously with Representative Isidore excused. Senator Sarah Manning volunteered to carry the item to the full committee.
Next steps: the Criminal Justice Commission will submit the federal application by the March 3 deadline and the request will be considered by the full Ways and Means Committee per the subcommittee motion.
