Syracuse council confirms at-large appointment, honors longtime staff and recognizes officer; advances EV chargers and public hearing notice

The Syracuse Common Council voted to fill an at-large vacancy by appointing Helen Hudson. The motion to appoint Hudson was seconded and passed by recorded vote in the meeting record; the transcript shows six members voting yes, one member voting no and one recorded abstention during the vote-count exchange.

Council also adopted a resolution recognizing Carmelita for 30 years of service to the Council office; Carmelita accepted the honor and spoke briefly about her commitment to supporting elected officials.

In a separate recognition, the council adopted a proclamation honoring Syracuse Police Officer Jamie Pastorelli for work that led to securing shelter for a resident, Rhea Holmes. Councilor Moore read a letter from the police chief in support of the proclamation; the chief’s letter, read aloud in the meeting, praised the officer’s “compassion, leadership and commitment” and described how local nonprofit partners helped transition Ms. Holmes into permanent housing.

Council discussed and moved forward several administrative and infrastructure items. Members introduced item 46 to install two Level 3 fast-charging electric-vehicle stations in a publicly owned park and praised the project for advancing climate goals and improving park usability while urging fair contracting practices so local small businesses can compete. Council also announced a public hearing for the CDBG block grant scheduled for March 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Several consent and noncontroversial items (a series of resolutions and routine appointments) were taken together and adopted by voice vote during the meeting.
