Churchill County school board backs superintendent, retains CCHS volleyball coach after closed session

The Churchill County School District board voted unanimously Feb. 24 to support Superintendent Gerald Parsons' decision and retain Churchill County High School head volleyball coach Tristan Johnson after a closed‑session review of a complaint brought under district policy.

The board moved into a closed session "pursuant to NRS 241.03" to hear an appeal related to policy 4,138 concerning alleged misconduct by Coach Tristan Johnson and later reconvened in open session. President Malkovich disclosed a family relationship: "Tristan Johnson is my niece," and said she intended to participate in the discussion and vote.

Before the vote, the board heard competing public comment. Parents Dailene and Daphne Star urged the board to take seriously what they described as unprofessional and discouraging communication toward their daughter after tryouts. Daphne Star said the student had been told her "height was not meant for her program," and asked the board to prioritize respectful treatment and accountability.

Current and former players also addressed the board. Paisley Star, a sophomore who was cut, testified that hearing her height described as unsuitable "was heartbreaking" and left her feeling defeated. Multiple former players and parents, including Brianne Florentzen and Leah Williams, spoke in support of Coach Johnson, praising her leadership, time spent with athletes and the program's fundraising and character‑building emphasis.

Superintendent Parsons and board members said the district followed legal confidentiality rules during the closed session. Counsel Charlotte explained that some factual details reviewed in closed session are legally confidential and would not be discussed in open meeting. The board clarified the superintendent's recommendation to retain Coach Johnson despite having identified issues during the review.

Trustee Joe McFadden moved to "support Superintendent Parsons' decision on this matter," a motion seconded by Trustee Bullock; the board voted unanimously in favor. The meeting minutes note the board did not disclose the confidential factual details discussed in closed session.

The board said any administrative directions or personnel follow‑up resulting from the review would be handled through appropriate, confidential processes.
