Riverside Local policy committee reviews NIL guidance, kindergarten cutoff, AI and finance policies

The Riverside Local Schools policy committee met to review a package of policy updates affecting athletics, enrollment, finance and classroom technology.

An unnamed committee presenter recommended advancing a district NIL (name, image and likeness) athletics policy as a first read and then waiting for state action before taking further steps. "From what I understand from OHSAA, this their policy and then the subsequent policy takes a lot of the noise off of us," the presenter said, describing a process in which the Ohio High School Athletic Association would be notified if a student signs an NIL agreement and would work with the student to protect the school's image. Committee chair Denise Brewster confirmed the policy would apply to any student attending Riverside, including nonresident or international students.

The committee also discussed enrollment changes stemming from House Bill 114, which the presenter said resets kindergarten eligibility to require a child to be 5 years old on the first day of kindergarten instruction rather than the district's prior Sept. 30 cutoff.
