Nye County appoints Corey Friedhoff as county clerk to finish term; commissioners point to continuity for upcoming elections

The Nye County Board of County Commissioners voted 5–0 on March 19 to appoint Corey Friedhoff as Nye County Clerk to fill the unexpired term following Mark Komp’s resignation effective April 1. Friedhoff, a longtime clerk’s office employee who has worked with the county’s elections processes, received the highest score in a ranking exercise conducted by commissioners and county staff.

The board interviewed eight candidates in a public series of three‑minute presentations and follow‑up questions. Commissioners used a scoring rubric covering statutory qualifications, education, prior experience, verbal communication and overall impression. The top three scorers were Corey Friedhoff (118 points), Kayla Ball (100) and William Hochstetler (79). Commissioner Jabbour made the motion to appoint Friedhoff, and Commissioner Cox seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

In her remarks Friedhoff emphasized hands‑on knowledge of the county’s election systems, familiarity with both legacy processes and an upcoming voter‑registration system transition, and the ability to ‘hit the ground running’ before scheduled ballots are printed. Clerk Mark Komp, who remains in office through March, submitted a written recommendation praising Friedhoff’s role in recent elections and her work on the office’s systems.

Commissioners stressed continuity: several members said that, given the short lead time before upcoming ballots and certification duties, an experienced internal candidate reduced operational risk. Friedhoff told the board she is prepared to begin managing day‑to‑day operations immediately and to work with existing staff to ensure election continuity.

What’s next: Friedhoff will assume the clerk’s duties April 1; commissioners and county staff said they will facilitate an orderly transition and support efforts to complete preparations for the upcoming election cycle.
