Nye County orders abatement of unsafe, unpermitted home at 6300 North Orcus Avenue

The Nye County Board of County Commissioners voted 4–0 Oct. 1 to declare an unpermitted structure at 6300 North Orcus Avenue a public nuisance and direct staff to abate the hazard and place a special assessment on the property to recover abatement costs.

County building officials told the board that code‑enforcement staff had posted a stop‑work order after finding framing and other work performed without permits and that the parcel is effectively unbuildable under county standards because it lacks water and sewer service. Building official Albert Cammarata said the structure’s foundation and framing do not meet code and that columns and beams were undersized, creating “a completely unsafe structure” that should not be occupied.

Multiple public‑safety witnesses — including local fire and emergency personnel and a regional planning commissioner — told the board the condition posed a risk to occupants, neighbors and first responders. Commissioners asked staff to follow up on removal of a red stop‑work tag and sought assurances that abatement procedures and fines would be enforced.

Commissioner DuBois moved to declare the property a nuisance, direct staff to proceed with abatement procedures and apply a special assessment for the abatement costs; the motion was seconded and carried 4–0. The board also asked Building and Safety to report back on the removed red tag.

Next steps: staff will begin the abatement process described in the agenda item and return to the board with implementation details and the final assessment amount. The county’s public‑records file and the building‑permit record will document enforcement actions.
