On Feb. 23 the Wheat Ridge City Council approved Council Bill O4‑20‑26, an ordinance amending Chapter 7 of the Wheat Ridge Code of Laws to require write‑in candidates for elective office to file an affidavit of intent with the city clerk at least 64 days before the election.
Attorney Jerry Dahl presented the item and said the provision mirrors language used by many municipalities and helps election officials determine whether to count write‑in votes. Dahl emphasized the rule does not prevent a voter from writing a name on a paper ballot; it governs whether election officials are required to count such votes in official canvassing unless an affidavit was timely filed.
There were no public speakers on the item. Council approved the ordinance on second reading by an 8–0 vote. The ordinance takes effect 15 days after final publication under the charter.
