Fresno County adopts Safe Roads to School action plan for 15 unincorporated sites

Fresno County supervisors on Feb. 10 voted to adopt a Safe Roads to School action plan, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, that identifies safety improvements at 15 unincorporated‑area school sites.
Mohammed Alimi of the county Department of Public Works and Planning said the action plan followed community work audits and outreach to school administrators, parents and students to identify infrastructure needs and to promote active transportation. He said the department hired consultant Tool Design Associates and that the next phase includes three demonstration projects funded by a second grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.
"The next step of the project, we actually received a second grant from OTS, to do demonstration projects at 3 locations," Alimi said. The demonstration projects will use temporary improvements — including marked crossings and temporary infrastructure — to evaluate what works in the field before seeking funding for permanent construction.
Supervisors praised the planning process and recognized an award the project received from the Central California chapter of Women in Transportation for transportation planning. The board adopted the action plan unanimously.
Implementation will proceed with demonstration projects, evaluation and then a search for funding to build permanent improvements at selected sites.
