Orange County supervisors honor Black History Month and Lunar New Year

The Orange County Board of Supervisors opened its meeting with two cultural recognitions.
Chair Doug Chaffee acknowledged the Black History Month presentation and thanked Supervisors Foley and Sarmiento for bringing the item forward. Vice Chair Katrina Foley highlighted inventions, leaders and institutions created by Black Americans and invited honorees to the podium, including Dorothy Mulkey. Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento recalled Mulkey's fair‑housing litigation that reached the U.S. Supreme Court (Reitman v. Mulkey) and observed the county's small Black population while stressing the community's outsized contributions.
Deirdre Harris, president of the NAACP of Orange County, marked the centennial of Black History Month: "Black history is American history," she said, urging continued attention to civil rights and inclusion.
The board then recognized Lunar New Year. Supervisors and community guests described Tet and other traditions, encouraged attendance at local festivals, and listed community leaders and organizations participating in area events. Supervisors noted the county's large and diverse Asian American population and highlighted festivals at the Great Park and university events.
The presentations included invitations to community programming — the county announced free tax preparation and EITC outreach events tied to the outreach campaign for low‑income workers.
