Yuba Sutter Arts Council details programs, murals and push to restore Sutter Theater

David Reed, executive director of the Yuba Sutter Arts Council, presented the council’s annual update to the Yuba County Board of Supervisors on May 27, describing educational programs, public‑art projects, and efforts to reopen more of the Sutter Theater.
Reed said the council serves both Yuba and Sutter counties as the designated affiliate of the California Arts Council and runs multiple programs including student art shows, Arts Exposure field trips, a youth mariachi program and veterans ceramics. "We are the designated affiliate of the California Arts Council representing, Yuba County as well as Sutter County," Reed said.
Reed detailed grant‑supported projects such as murals in Yuba City (including work funded through a partnership that produced tile murals by Yuba City High School students) and memorial work at the Arboga Assembly Center. He outlined an ongoing effort to raise money and complete architectural plans to reopen the back half of the Sutter Theater as a roughly 300‑seat traditional theater; Reed said an architect has been engaged and a set of plans is expected "in the next month or two" to prepare for bidding.
Supervisors thanked Reed for outreach and programming; supervisors discussed neighborhood mural partnerships and the potential for arts projects to complement street‑calming and downtown redevelopment efforts. Reed said some revenue comes from rentals and sponsorships and that the arts council pursues grants and regranting opportunities when available.
The presentation was informational; the board did not take direct funding action during this segment but discussed county partnerships and the council’s role in local cultural and economic development.
