The Yuba County Board of Supervisors on May 27 presented a proclamation honoring Terry Ayers for 35 years of service as a senior victim‑witness advocate and recognized May as Mental Health Awareness Month and Maternal Mental Health Month.
The board read a proclamation that traced Ayers’ career — from work with the public defender’s office and probation to founding the county’s comfort canine program in 2020 — and congratulated her on retirement after decades of service. Following the proclamation the board invited Ayers and guests forward for a photo.
Separately, the board proclaimed May 2025 as National Mental Health Awareness Month and National Maternal Mental Health Month for Yuba County, noting prevalence statistics cited in the proclamation (for example, that 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health issue annually and that 1 in 3 new and expectant mothers in California experience moderate to severe prenatal mood and anxiety symptoms). The board commended First 5 Yuba and the Blue Shift Project of Yuba Sutter for local efforts supporting perinatal mental health.
Board members briefly thanked the honorees and advocates. The proclamations are ceremonial recognitions and do not by themselves create a county program or funding commitment.
