Board approves grant-funded microchip scanners to help residents reunite lost dogs

McClintock said the county purchased 14 scanners and plans to deploy them initially at PATH, selected post offices (including Rancho Tehama), and other community hubs such as staffed Cal Fire stations where feasible. Each scanner agreement will require the host partner to maintain the unit (charging), display instructional flyers, and follow steps for reporting a recovered microchip; staff will track use through QR codes.
Supervisors discussed potential remote placements and options to solar-power standalone units in very remote locations. McClintock said the program is fully grant-funded and the county has already purchased the scanners. The board approved the resolution by roll call.
Next steps include finalizing host agreements, producing public instructions, and tracking usage data for future program evaluation.
