Sutter County supervisors elect new chair, vice chair and chair pro tem

The Sutter County Board of Supervisors held its 2026 organizational meeting Jan. 13 and elected a new leadership team.

Supervisor Mike Ziegenmeier was nominated and, after a roll-call vote in which Supervisors Boone, Baines, Flores, Stevens and Ziegenmeier each voted "Aye," was installed as the boards chair. Outgoing chair Supervisor Flores formally handed the gavel to Ziegenmeier and praised county staff for their work during his term.

Carm Baines was nominated for vice chair and won the subsequent roll-call vote with unanimous "Aye" votes recorded by the clerk. Supervisor Jeff Stevens was nominated and approved as chair pro tempore in a separate roll-call vote, also recorded unanimously.

Board members used the reorganizational portion of the meeting to outline priorities for the year. Newly installed Chair Ziegenmeier highlighted infrastructure and public-safety priorities and referenced several initiatives the board plans to pursue this year, including advancing the long-planned Sutter Point development and exploring a unified fleet services program that staff estimate could save the county "between $500 to $1,000,000 a year." He also flagged work with a company to explore lining failing culverts as a lower-cost alternative to full replacement.

The votes: the transcript documents roll-call tallies for the chair, vice-chair and chair pro tempore elections with all participating supervisors voting "Aye." The reorganizational actions were procedural and no other policy items were bundled with the leadership votes.

The board adjourned after completing district reports, memorial requests and scheduling the next meeting for Jan. 27 at Sutter High School.
