Waste Management updates Lyon County on Silver Springs transfer station; mid‑June target cited

Kim Fleming of Waste Management told the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners on Feb. 19 that the company received a permit to break ground for the Silver Springs transfer station in January and began construction the same month. Fleming said the project’s conservative construction schedule is about 145 days and currently projects mid‑June completion, though the company is pursuing acceleration options "if safe and feasible."
Fleming introduced local operations staff who will run the facility, including transfer‑station district manager George Balasteros, Lyon County district manager Morton Bridal, and operations manager Christian Beever, and said a customer service representative dedicated to Silver Springs has begun training. She said the contractor has re‑sequenced work to prioritize foundations, building erection (planned to begin in March) and mechanical/electrical/plumbing work in late April.
Fleming said Waste Management will make recycling drop‑off available at the transfer station at no additional cost to residents and highlighted customer satisfaction scores specific to Lyon County (8.93 out of 10). She told commissioners WM has coordinated with the county on permitting and named ClearScan as the firm that provided stamped pre‑engineered Meadow building plans.
Commissioners thanked the team for the presentation and asked about recycling bins and water usage; Fleming confirmed bins will be provided. County staff agreed to coordinate a future update as the project moves into major construction phases and to schedule a ribbon‑cutting invitation through the Silver Springs Area Chamber of Commerce.
The company and county repeatedly noted schedule sensitivity to weather and said community outreach will continue as construction proceeds. The board did not take an action on the presentation; staff will return with additional updates during construction.
