Rio Tinto (Kennecott) flags repeated trespassing near Copperton; council says it will coordinate with UPD

A Rio Tinto/Kennecott representative addressed the council during public comment to flag recurring trespassing on company property adjoining town land near the Lions Club. The representative said gate locks had been cut and that employees had photographed people entering hazardous infrastructure areas; the company said it will coordinate with UPD when trespass incidents occur.
Council members responded that the town can add signage and that residents should be discouraged from approaching operational areas. The company noted that some trespassing is not by local residents and that the work area is subject to mine‑safety rules and hazards. Council and company staff urged residents to report suspicious activity to UPD and said they would evaluate additional physical barriers and posted warnings.
"If you see anyone going down in that area, if you hear anyone talking about going into that area... please tell them not to," the Rio Tinto representative said.
