Board honors retiring corporal, approves library bylaw revisions and reappointments

At its Aug. 4 meeting the Wilson County Board of Commissioners approved a request from Sheriff Kevin Woodard to award the badge and service weapon to Corporal James Averett upon his retirement effective June 30, 2025. Woodard outlined Averett’s service record, including roles at the county animal shelter, as a field training officer and leadership of search‑and‑rescue dive team certification efforts; the board voted to approve the presentation of the badge and service weapon to the retired corporal.
Wilson County Public Library Director Carrie Blanchard presented proposed revisions to the library trustees’ bylaws, citing changes in day‑to‑day practices (for example, ceasing routine late fines for returned items), a change in trustee meeting timing (moving five monthly meetings from the third to the first Tuesday), and clarifying maintenance responsibilities. Blanchard said she based draft language on bylaws from nearby counties and invited further edits; the board approved the bylaw revisions as presented.
Under the appointments committee recommendations the board reappointed Wendy Ricklets to the Wilson County Library Board of Trustees and reappointed Rob Boyette to the Wilson Community College Board of Trustees; the board approved the recommendations.
