Sharpsburg leaders press for local polling site; farmworker coalition invites officials to emergency‑preparedness meeting

Two public commenters asked the Wilson County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 4 for county support on community access and inclusion issues.

Clayton Davis, speaking on behalf of the town of Sharpsburg, asked the board to help establish a polling location in the Wilson County side of Sharpsburg so residents would not have to travel seven to nine miles to Elm City to vote. Davis said the town has identified a suitable building and funding to operate the poll site and asked that the board of elections and county staff assist in making the site available for the coming election. County Manager Ron Hunt said the issue is handled through the local board of elections and that he would bring the matter to the board of elections director’s attention.

Fatima Rodriguez, representing a grassroots coalition called United for the Earth, invited commissioners to an Aug. 19 community‑and‑government meeting in Wilson focused on including Latino farmworker communities in emergency preparedness. Rodriguez said the coalition has partnered with UNC researchers to compile a statewide database mapping farmworker camps registered with the Department of Labor and that state agencies and universities have expressed interest in the work. A coalition member added a brief note of support and urged commissioners to attend.

Both requests were delivered during the public‑comment portion of the meeting; commissioners acknowledged the items and staff indicated they would follow up with the appropriate boards and agencies.
