Senate adopts Reach Out and Read Day resolution and welcomes program leaders

The Georgia Senate on Jan. 27 adopted a resolution recognizing Reach Out and Read Day and commended the program’s statewide early-literacy work.
Secretary read SR581, which cites the program’s training of more than 1,000 medical providers and its implementation in hundreds of thousands of well-child visits statewide. The chair heard no objection and the resolution was adopted.
Senator Hickman introduced Reach Out and Read executive director Amy Erickson and several program staff who were present at the Capitol. Erickson thanked the Senate for its prior budget line-item support and said the program operates in 84 counties with the goal of reaching all 159. "This is such an incredible personal moment for me right now," Erickson told the chamber, noting 13 years with the organization and urging continued investment to expand early-literacy services.
Books from the program were placed on legislators’ desks as part of the recognition. The resolution and the guest remarks were ceremonial and nonbinding; senators said they hoped to build on the program’s recent state funding in future budgets.
