Vigo County unveils GIS hub and district finder to help residents find precincts and representatives

Vigo County’s surveyor office demonstrated a new GIS hub on the county website that includes a district finder and address search to help residents locate precinct boundaries and elected officials.
Bruce Allen, the county surveyor, showed commissioners how the GIS portal links to the county’s map and allows users to click on a commissioner, city or school-board district and see precinct details. He said an address search will automatically zoom to a resident’s precinct and display their commissioner, county council member, city council member, state representative and state senator.
Allen said the surveyor’s office plans to add additional layers in time, including parks, trails and possibly street-closure and snow-route information. He also provided flyers with a QR code for the hub and encouraged outreach to builders and community members.
Commissioners praised the tool as an easy way for residents to learn who represents them and said it could help recruitment for precinct committeemen.
Next steps: the surveyor’s office will continue to add data layers and promote the hub to residents and stakeholders.
