Council approves larger monument sign for new senior apartment PUD on East Terracotta

The Crystal Lake City Council on Oct. 21 approved a final Planned Unit Development amendment to permit a larger freestanding monument sign at 731 East Terracotta Avenue, the site of the planned Fox Run Senior Apartments. City staff described the request as increasing the allowable sign height to approximately 6.5 feet (from a 4-foot residential maximum) and enlarging the copy area to roughly 25 square feet (instead of 16 square feet). Planning and Zoning had recommended approval by a 5–1 vote.
Staff presented comparisons to nearby senior housing signage and noted the proposed sign would meet setback requirements. Petitioners had no additional comments. Council members discussed visibility, adjacent traffic speed and appropriate scale for a large building on Route 176. After public and council discussion, a motion to adopt an ordinance granting the PUD amendment passed on roll call (one councilmember recorded a 'No'). The council instructed staff to finalize ordinance language and update PUD records.
