Crystal Lake recognized as RRCA Runner Friendly Community; youth commission highlights civic engagement

Crystal Lake received a Runner Friendly Community designation from the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), and the council honored local running organizations and volunteers during the Nov. 18 meeting.

A video and multiple brief remarks from members of the Hill Striders and local race organizers highlighted the city’s miles of scenic trails, maintenance of safe routes, signage and law-enforcement support for runners. "Crystal Lake is unique in that it offers miles of scenic trails that run along roads through parks, in and out of conservation areas," a presenter said in the video. Mayor Heluglein said the designation reflects strong community partnerships and praised organizers and volunteers for promoting fitness and safety.

Council also heard from members of the city’s youth commission. Charlie Ann Benton, a junior at Prairie Ridge High School, said commissioners have been meeting with public-safety officials to learn how fire and police operations work. Jack Lyle, a senior at Crystal Lake Central, summarized a meeting with McHenry County Clerk Joe Tirio that focused on improving voter turnout in local elections — currently "only about 16%" compared with much higher turnout in national contests — and said the commission plans events to boost civic participation among high-school students.

Mayor Heluglein called the youth commissioners "bright, bright kids" and thanked volunteers and staff who support the programs. The council presented a plaque recognizing the Hill Striders and encouraged residents to participate in upcoming community runs, including a Thanksgiving Day 5K at Lippold that supports the Crystal Lake Food Bank.
