Board previews NSBA presentation on accountability metrics and governance

Thomas said the presentation will highlight Charles County Public Schools' governance handbook, the expansion from a seven- to a nine-member board with district representation and the addition of a student member of the board (SMOB), and the development of community-centered accountability metrics. She described internal targets, such as ensuring at least 75 percent of board meeting time focuses on student learning and achievement and establishing metrics for superintendent performance indicators.
Thomas and board staff described subcommittees (community engagement, fiscal management, policy management and strategic planning) as mechanisms to increase transparency and public engagement. The presentation will also link the district's work to Maryland's Blueprint for the Future and show examples of longitudinal data the district uses to assess policy impacts.
Board members suggested adding presenter notes and offering the presentation to the public after NSBA, and praised staff for data collection and strategic planning support. No formal board action was taken; the preview was an information item and refinement was invited before the April conference.
