Commissioners approve annual volunteer-awards logistics, adopt consent agenda and open CDBG-DR hearing

At the start of the meeting the Ashe County Board of Commissioners adopted the consent agenda by voice vote.
During public-comment items and presentations, a county representative requested permission to hold the annual Ashe County volunteer awards ceremony at Ashe County High School, provided nomination timelines (deadline Feb. 13) and asked to begin planning to submit nominations for the 2026 governor's volunteer service awards (county deadline Feb. 27). Commissioners moved and approved the event plans and the request to proceed with governor's award nominations.
Staff also opened a required public hearing for upcoming CDBG-DR (disaster recovery) programs being administered by the state; staff said this meeting was a formality so the county can be ready to apply once program rules are final and that further public hearings will be required for specific applications. Staff noted the Renew NC single-family housing recovery program and a small-rental recovery program for landlords with one to four units; the Renew NC application deadline was listed as Feb. 28.
The board recessed briefly to move to a second-floor conference room for a scheduled presentation and announced the next regular meeting schedule and holiday closures.
