Commissioners approve resolution to accept Deep Ford land via Great Trail grant with New River Conservancy co-application

Andrew Downs of the New River Conservancy asked the board to add Ashe County as a co-applicant on a Great Trail State grant so the county could receive the Deep Ford property that grant funds will purchase.
Downs said the conservancy had been awarded "$130,000" from the Great Trail State grant program and had matched it with about $70,000 in donations. "The total cost was, almost $200,000," he told commissioners, listing survey, environmental assessment, title work and acquisition costs.
Commissioners asked about parking and site access; Downs said the site is steep and will require careful routing but that preliminary site indications suggested accommodations for roughly 20 cars at the pull-off and additional parking options nearer the top of the parcel.
After questions, a commissioner moved to approve the resolution to add the county as co-applicant; the motion was seconded and "motion carries" was called by the chair.
Next steps: the county will be included on the grant contract and will work with the New River Conservancy on future planning for trail and site amenities; detailed site design and parking plans were not yet available.
