Board approves request to accept $200,000 state grant to fund temporary Soil & Water position

Andrew, representing New River Soil and Water, told the Ashe County Board of Commissioners that the agency applied for a Hurricane Helene grant to cover a three-year temporary Soil and Water position. The grant would be provided at 100% state funding and total $200,000, Andrew said, with $100,000 expected to arrive in the county in the first year and the remainder to be spread across the three-year period.
"It will cover their benefits, their salary. It's $200,000, and it is 100% paid for by the state," Andrew said, adding that the position would also support debris removal and EWP (USDA Emergency Watershed Protection) work.
The county's role will be to allow the funds to flow through and provide the county benefits package for the employee; Andrew said the position is expected to be split between Ashe and Alleghany counties, with the latter using the position only as needed. Commissioner (speaker 7) moved to request the funding and accept the grant terms; the motion was seconded and approved.
Board members asked whether candidates were identified; Andrew said interested applicants had come forward and that the soil-and-water board had been consulted. The board authorized staff to advertise for the position and to proceed with the grant acceptance process.
