Ashe County approves resolution to seek state/federal grants for $600,000 Ash Park improvements

Ashe County commissioners on Dec. 15 approved a resolution allowing Parks & Recreation to apply for either a new disaster-recovery grant or the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to fund a proposed $600,000 Ash Park improvement project.
Parks staff described a three-part project that would add a 40-by-40 shelter, a 30-by-50 splash pad and a playground designed for ages 2–6. Staff said the proposal aligns with the county's 2021 parks master plan, which included resident support for splash pads and expanded picnic/seating areas. The presentation noted the county has documented community interest and would conduct additional public input if the project advances.
Both the recovery grant and the statewide PARTF program require a local match. Staff estimated the county's match obligation at $300,000 if the project is awarded, and the resolution asks the board to commit the match for whichever single grant is awarded (staff will apply for one grant at a time, not both). The recovery grant is awarded in March and PARTF awards in May; staff said they would seek community input and line up contractors if funding is secured.
Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution, and the board approved it. Staff said they will return with details about local matching sources and project sequencing if the county is selected for funding.
