Recreation report: registrations strong, staffing gaps delay expanded summer camp week

The department distributed a refreshed brochure and reported the previous dance season produced 56 performances with 228 participants and the current season has 237 enrolled across group and private lessons. Youth basketball registrations reached about 357 participants across divisions. Special events included Breakfast with Santa, which staff said drew 545 visitors, and the polar dip on Jan. 1 with around 200 participants.
Staff reported difficulties filling the sports coordinator role: multiple candidates were selected and later declined, leaving the position unfilled while Ryan Freeworth continues part time to support evening and weekend activities. Aquatics hiring and training are planned for March and April; staff stated the minimum age for aquatic positions is 15. The school district (KUSD) extended summer from six to eight weeks, which affected programming: the department will run a seven-week day camp (six weeks at the academy and one week at Manzanita) because no facility is available for the full eighth week.
Staff encouraged volunteers for coaching and event support and asked commissioners to help promote job openings and programs.
