The State Controlling Board approved a federally funded phase 2 archaeological survey at a military training facility after the Ohio History Connection recommended additional fieldwork.
Dominic Shano, legislative liaison for the Adjutant General's Department, told the board the agency previously completed a phase 1 survey in 2008 and that the phase 2 work will better determine whether homesteads, pottery or other cultural materials exist on the site. If the Ohio History Connection determines a site is significant, the agency would pursue mitigation measures.
Senator Wilkin asked why the survey is being done now and whether the 2008 findings could clarify the need for another study. Shano said he would report back with the 2008 results and noted the project is fully funded with federal Army National Guard funds through a master cooperative agreement. The board approved the item and recorded follow‑up requests.
