Combs adopts district chat app to replace Band and GroupMe, citing oversight and safety

The board heard a detailed briefing on the district’s new centralized mobile chat app and the rationale for replacing third‑party messaging tools.

Speaker 15 (district communications/IT lead) described the new app (from the district’s website/CRM vendor) as a single platform that syncs group lists from Synergy, auto‑translates messages based on user language preference, archives all chats and provides keyword flagging and content moderation. “All of the chats are logged, they're audible, and they're archived,” Speaker 15 said, describing the app’s oversight features.

Administrators said the app eliminates anonymous messaging, prevents student‑to‑student direct messaging unless whitelisted, and keeps coach/parent/booster communications within district systems. They also said the app is not intended for disciplinary 1:1 communications and that staff should use Synergy/Gmail or phone for sensitive matters.

Several board members raised concerns about privacy and monitoring, including who reviews flagged content outside business hours and how non‑parent volunteers and homeschoolers are granted access. Staff said volunteers can be added by providing name and email and will receive appropriate permissions; homeschool students involved in district teams can also be added.

Board members who tested the app praised its rollout, training and responsiveness to early feature requests (for example, pinned messages and calendar/event functionality). Administrators said the district will continue to collect feedback and may enable additional features only if they meet safety and privacy standards.

No formal vote was required for the informational rollout; discussion focused on implementation details and safety controls.
