Port Jervis highlights police accreditation, new social-work pilot and fire equipment grants

In his address the mayor said the Port Jervis Police Department received state accreditation on Sept. 10 in Albany and reported sustained reductions in both violent and property crime, citing the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. "According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services... UCR Part 1 offenses reached their lowest level since 1980, marking a 17.86 decrease from 2024," the mayor said.
The mayor previewed 2026 policing initiatives: a social work pilot and a civilian service coordinator funded by a $75,000 grant to support individuals in crisis, deployment of a police drone unit, enhanced recruiting and a countywide records management system. "Some other programs being implemented by our police department in 2026 include social work pilot program, civilian service coordinator, which will be funded by a $75,000 grant program... 2026 will also begin the deployment of a police drone unit," the mayor said.
On fire services, the mayor thanked outgoing fire chief Keith Brown, welcomed Chief Anthony Fuller and said the department responded to 484 calls for service and provided 109 mutual-aid responses to 12 municipalities across three states in 2025. He said the city secured a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for $530,000 to purchase 55 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units and additional state recruitment and retention funding of $25,000 for health and wellness programming. "The fire department is finally able, after 7 long years, to secure the FEMA AFG grant for a total of $530,000... written for 55 new SCBA," the mayor said.
The address included planning for upgrades to the fire training facility and a new fire apparatus that the mayor said will be 80% funded through Congressman Pat Ryan's office. No vote or contract awards for apparatus procurement were recorded in the speech.
