Greater Lowell wins DESE planning grant, small PERC award to expand HVAC program
Summary

Assistant Superintendent and Principal Michael Barton told the school committee that Greater Lowell Regional Vocational Technical and the University of Massachusetts Lowell were awarded a $25,000 planning grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to support early college planning and to pursue an early college designation. Barton said the school will "keep you updated" as the partnership with UMass Lowell develops.
Barton also said the school received a $5,000 grant from the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) to upgrade and expand the HVAC shop and to introduce a propane curriculum with "enhanced real world experiences" for HVAC students. Barton described the PERC award as targeted to curriculum, equipment and instruction for career-technical education.
Both announcements were presented as informational items; committee members responded positively and there was no substantive debate. Barton characterized the DESE grant as a planning award and said the school is seeking formal designation in partnership with UMass Lowell.
