Greater Lowell swim team honored as vocational state champions

The Greater Lowell Regional Vocational Technical girls swim team and their coaches were recognized at the school committee meeting for capturing the state vocational championship and breaking meet and state vocational records. Superintendent/Director opened the recognition by inviting the coaches and athletes to the microphone and thanking them for "a wonderful season and a wonderful coaching job."
Head coach Kate Garcia and assistant coaches Mallon Marin, Peter Fortunato and Ryan Hughes were introduced before individual athletes described their accomplishments. Student Avery Naidu said, "I'm really proud of how we've done as a team," and cited victories in the 200 individual medley, the 500 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. Makayden Naidu reported winning the 100 backstroke and placing in other events; Erin Smith said she earned a state time in a 400 free leg, noting "58 seconds, I think." Other athletes including Madeline Rogers and Anna Julia "AJ" Seefeld described relay and individual places and preparations for sectionals and states.
Coaches and committee members praised the students' teamwork and the program's improvements; the committee thanked the coaches, two of whom are alumni, for returning to support the program. The recognition concluded with committee members wishing the athletes luck at upcoming sectionals and state competitions.
