Corinth proclaims Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week; local volunteer thanks council

The City of Corinth on Feb. 2026 issued a proclamation recognizing Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week and honoring residents living with congenital heart defects.
Mayor Bill Heideman signed the proclamation, which cites the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) and notes that congenital heart defects affect about one in 100 births. The document states that advances in care have increased life expectancy and calls for increased access to lifelong specialized cardiac care.
David Gilligan, a volunteer with the ACHA and a person born with a transposition of the great arteries, accepted the proclamation and thanked the council. "I volunteer for the Adult Congenital Heart Association, serving on their patient and family advisory board," Gilligan said. He described having surgery as an infant at what is now Cook Children's and noted that in the Dallas–Fort Worth area there are two ACHA‑accredited adult CHD clinics: UT Southwestern and Cook Children's.
Gilligan invited the public to a local ACHA fundraiser, noting the Dallas‑Fort Worth "Walk for 1 in 100" will be held Sunday, Oct. 25, in Bedford at the Boys Ranch. Council members offered public thanks and several members noted personal or family connections to congenital heart defects.
The proclamation was read aloud during the city council meeting and entered into the public record.
