Scurry County commissioners voted to adopt a plan to consolidate courthouse phone numbers and use an auto-attendant system to route callers to departments.
County staff reported the courthouse and county locations currently have dozens of published lines — staff cited "37 numbers and 17 fax lines" — and that Visual Edge proposed moving to one main number per location and an auto-attendant. Vendor representative (Speaker 8) described how the system would greet callers with language such as, "Thank you for calling Scurry County Courthouse. For the county judge, press 1," and allow callers to dial department extensions or select auto-attendant options.
Supporters said consolidation could lower monthly and annual costs and reduce robocalls because automated systems can detect and drop spam that cannot navigate the auto-attendant. At the same time, youth-center staff said parents use direct lines for pickup and worried about an automated menu during critical pickup times; staff and the vendor agreed the system can be configured to ring directly to the youth center during pickup windows.
Speaker 3 moved that the court adopt one number per location; the motion was seconded and approved.
County staff said the vendor will inventory current extensions, reprogram phone sets and retain individual internal extension dialing for staff while presenting a simplified public number for external callers.
