Rhode Island Senate unanimously passes resolution honoring Brown University shooting victims, commends responders

The Rhode Island Senate unanimously passed a resolution honoring the victims of the Dec. 13, 2025 shooting at Brown University and commending the first responders and medical personnel who responded.

Senator Chacon introduced the resolution and asked that it be read in full. The clerk read the text, which recounts the shooting at a campus building that houses engineering and physics programs, names the victims (the transcript contains inconsistent renderings of one victim’s surname), and commends Providence firefighters, emergency medical personnel, state and federal law enforcement (including the FBI and ATF), and Rhode Island Hospital staff for their roles in the response and care of the wounded.

"This was a horrifying tragedy," Senator Bell said during debate, praising law enforcement and residents who provided footage that assisted investigators. Bell also noted that an anonymous individual posted information on Reddit that contributed to solving aspects of the case, calling that intervention an act of heroism.

Leader Chacon moved passage of the resolution; the motion was seconded as recorded in the transcript. The presiding officer called for the voice vote and declared, "The ayes have it," announcing that the resolution passed.

The resolution directs the secretary of state to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the families of the victims and to named municipal, state and federal officials. The Senate then cleared the desk of business and later adjourned in memory of the victims.
