Bolivar students sweep History Bowl; board celebrates district academic honors

Bolivar Board of Education members opened their February meeting by welcoming second-grade student-council members and recognizing recent student achievements across the district.
At the center of the honors was the Bolivar History Bowl program. Dr. Campbell introduced the team and Jeremy Cornelison, the sponsor, told the board the district’s teams finished first, second and third at a recent Morrisville competition — a podium sweep he said was rare and the product of multi-year student preparation and practice. "These kids just wow me," Cornelison said, describing sustained top finishes in the large-division competition.
Several team members introduced themselves to the board. "I'm Silas Vickers. I'm in eighth grade, and I've been doing this for three years," one student said. The sponsor described questions spanning local history, famous figures and difficult topics that require both recall and written answers.
The board also recognized a range of district achievements: VHS FBLA placed third overall at the District 13 competition with 43 students attending, and Dr. Goodman announced that senior Micah Thomas is a National Merit Scholarship finalist, a designation the board said places Thomas among roughly the top 1% of U.S. high-school seniors.
Board members praised the coaches, teachers and volunteers who support extracurricular and academic programs and invited the students and staff to keep representing the district at future contests.
The meeting moved on after applause and a group photo of the students and staff.
