Elkhorn students preview Model UN conference, say club builds public‑speaking and research skills

Matthew Hanley, the Model UN adviser at Elkhorn High School, introduced student delegates to the school board on Feb. 23 and described the student‑led club’s plans to attend its first multi‑school conference in Madison in March.
“We’ll have about 12 active members,” a student said, outlining that three students will represent each country and that committees will tackle topics such as modern conflicts, digital privacy and the sovereignty challenges facing low‑lying island nations. Hanley told the board the conference gives students “valuable skills that’ll help you throughout high school and college.”
Students said the club’s delegates will represent Ecuador, Syria and Somalia and will work in committee to draft position papers and resolutions that reflect their assigned countries’ perspectives. The presentation highlighted the club as a student‑initiated effort and a pathway for leadership and civic education at the high school.
The board did not take any formal action on the presentation; members thanked the students and wished them luck for the March conference.
