Verona council approves payments, denies damage claim and signs off on contracts

Chair Hoehnke also moved to deny a claim filed by Nathan Johnson for $652.83 stemming from a manhole retaining ring failure on Northern Lights Road, reported to have occurred on Feb. 4, 2026. City staff and the city’s insurance carrier recommended denial, citing Wisconsin case law and the city’s routine inspection and maintenance; the council voted to deny the claim.
On infrastructure contracting, Alder Tucker Long moved to approve an inspection services contract with Strand for Hyperdrive Roadway and Bridge Construction (Project 2025-109) for an amount not to exceed $1,940,000. Staff said Strand was selected after a request for qualifications with five responses and that the inspection fees will be the developer’s responsibility. Councilors asked staff about scoping and how future staff capacity might change consultant needs; Mr. Manning said city applications for an engineering technician remained open. The council approved the contract by voice vote.
Alders also approved AECOM contract amendment No. 2 for the Mark Drive reconstruction project to add design work at an additional cost not to exceed $47,635; the motion carried.
All listed motions were approved by voice vote with no opposition recorded in the meeting transcript.
