Solid-waste and recycling staff presented a year-in-review of operational improvements, community engagement and upcoming events.
Presenters described hiring five new positions focused on customer service, new assisted-loading collection trucks (12 vehicles), high-visibility uniforms, a newly wrapped recycling outreach SUV, and training and safety staff additions. Staff reported nearly 39,000 tons of trash collected and growth in recycling operations.
Operational tools highlighted included a bulk-waste pickup scheduler with 2,075 requests to date and digital landfill passes (116 issued since November via QR/email). A contamination dashboard was launched to identify areas with high recycling contamination and target education. Staff said outreach totaled more than 7,001 interactions and 33 education events and promoted the Trash Bash Recycle Rally scheduled for April 11 at 1700 W. Detroit St.
Presenters also recognized long‑tenured employees and volunteers; Michael Spurgeon was named Recycling Advocate of the Year.
The presentation was informational; no council action was recorded on these items during the meeting.
