The Little Compton Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Abigail M. Wilkie as deputy town clerk effective Feb. 23, 2026. The council also offered support for her to pursue the Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation with course costs paid by the town when she is ready.
During the same agenda item the council considered authorizing a search to fill the clerk vacancy created by the promotion. Councilors moved and seconded a motion to table the search until the ongoing FY27 budget deliberations are concluded, citing uncertainty about funding for a new hire; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Town Clerk Heather spoke in strong support of retaining sufficient staffing in the clerk’s office and described the potential operational impacts of reductions, particularly during election years and on services relied upon by elderly or homebound residents. Councilors agreed to revisit the vacancy in the context of final budget decisions.
