Recreation Supervisor Victor Pitino reported that after the closure of the Cal Oaks Sports Park pool, the city successfully transitioned summer aquatics programming to Vista (Murrieta Vista High School) under a partnership with Murrieta Valley Unified School District. Pitino said the program ran June 7 through Sept. 28, offering swim lessons, public swim and lap swim, with lifeguarding and instruction provided by Swan Aquatics.
Pitino said the city recorded about 3,300 program visits over the season and saw a 66% increase in swim lesson registrations year over year. He credited scheduling consolidation, better marketing (social media campaigns, banners, signage at high schools) and daily coordination with city staff for improved operations and safety. Pitino acknowledged early-season hiccups with registration and vendor refunds but said those were addressed in a debrief with the vendor.
For 2026, staff recommended earlier marketing (as soon as April), hiring two to three standby staff to cover vacations and absences, continued partnership with the school district and exploring end-of-season community events.
