The senator from Chittenden Southeast announced on the floor that she will retire at the end of the 2025–2026 biennium and will not be a candidate in upcoming leadership or election cycles.
Speaking to colleagues, the senator said she has served nearly 16 years in the Senate and four years previously on the Burlington School District board, totaling roughly 20 years in public service. She said she will turn 65 when the next biennium begins and told the chamber she intends to "lay down some of [her] work and some of [her] tools" and will return to writing and teaching after leaving the Senate.
The senator asked the chamber to allow her remarks to be journalized; the Senate voted in favor and the remarks will be included in the record. After the journalization vote, the senator renewed an earlier motion and the Senate agreed to stand adjourned until 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026.
The senator asked colleagues not to consider endorsements from her but said she would offer confidential advice to anyone who asks. The Senate President indicated there would be an opportunity later in the session for extended remarks and appreciation.
