Rexburg council approves bid process for four pickleball courts with option to add cover later

The Rexburg City Council voted March 20 to put a designed four-court pickleball project out to bid, with bid alternates for lighting, fencing and an optional covering to be considered later.
Parks and rec staff presented survey results used to shape the proposal: about 1,200 total respondents, of whom 185 said they play pickleball; among those players, roughly 100 preferred four indoor courts while about 85 preferred eight outdoor courts. Staff said the average monthly membership willingness was near $12, though responses ranged from zero up to $100.
Staff’s recommended site is adjacent to the Donjo Sports Complex and the drawing provided space, buffer zones and construction details; staff described options for post-tension concrete outdoor courts and separate bid alternates for lighting and fencing. A fabric-cover option discussed during the meeting carried an estimated cost in the neighborhood of $400,000, staff said, and could be pursued later if budget allows.
Council debated whether to build outdoor courts first and add a cover later or to build and cover now. Concerns included management and access control if a cover required charging for use. After discussion, Council Member Eric Erickson moved to accept staff’s recommendation to put the four-court design out to bid; Council Member Colin Erickson seconded. The council approved the motion by voice vote.
Staff will solicit bids with alternates and return results to the council for a later decision on covering options and final contract awards.
