Morris County officials at the Oct. 8 work session told commissioners that the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MCMUA) will introduce budgets on Oct. 14 that include a $2-per-ton reduction in the tipping fee, which the director described as "bringing it down to $113 per ton" starting in 2026.
The director said the change would reduce costs for county waste generators and estimated the adjustment would save "just under $1,000,000" in 2026 compared with 2025. He also said MCMUA plans to take over operations of the county transfer station on Dec. 16, 2025, and that 27 employees from the current operator (JP Mascara, as named in the meeting) were expected to be onboarded.
Separately, the director said MCMUA will authorize new curbside recycling shared-service contracts with Long Hill, Hanover, Rockaway and Wharton at an upcoming meeting; those contracts had been expiring in 2025.
Why it matters: Changes to tipping fees and service contracts directly affect municipal budgets, haulers and businesses that generate county waste, and the operational transition for the transfer station involves staffing and continuity of service.
What happened next: The board received the informational report during the work session; any budget approval or contract awards will occur at the scheduled MCMUA meetings and through formal vote processes of the authority.
