Students and athletes take the board stage: Jackson Elementary projects and high school gymnastics celebrated

At the May 12 Elkhorn Area School District board meeting, Jackson Elementary students presented habitat research posters and the high school gymnastics team described a season that included individual state champions and a strong finish after moving to Division 1; the student representative reported on mental health month activities and senior events.
Jackson Elementary students visited the boardroom on May 12 to display classroom projects on habitats and explain the plants and animals that help species survive in different environments.
Mrs. Wigg, the students’ teacher, told the board the class had researched habitats and “completely designed their own posters based on the research that they have done and they're gonna present them to you.” Board members circulated among tables, asked guiding questions and thanked students for sharing their work.
The board also heard from the high school gymnastics team. A coach described the program’s recent accomplishments: after winning the Division 2 state title the previous year, the team moved up to Division 1, finished the season competitively and produced individual state champions. The coach said the team "got moved up, and so we finished…fourth" in a higher division and praised athletes who earned individual honors.
The student representative (Jackie) reported high-school activities including Hope Squad events for Mental Health Month, senior awards night and student career-preparation work through Xello. Jackie described her own involvement in student council, FCCLA and athletics and reported her ACT retake score of 34.
Administrators later noted district-wide recognition from Project Lead The Way: multiple elementary schools and secondary schools received distinctions and the district earned a distinguished district award; one middle school also received a national community impact award for Project Lead The Way work.
Board members and the superintendent thanked students and coaches for their presentations and congratulated athletes and award recipients. The presentations provided community visibility for classroom and extracurricular accomplishments ahead of the business portion of the meeting.
