Board approves Summit ESC strategic‑planning services after presentation on focus‑group model

Jeff Ferguson of the Summit Educational Service Center told the Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education on July 10 that effective strategic planning starts with aligning values to action and concentrating the district's limited "time and money." Ferguson outlined a three‑phase approach: preplanning with stakeholder focus groups, a writing phase that produces a draft plan and an accountability phase that organizes responsibilities and scorecard reviews.

Ferguson described practical tools the ESC uses, including anonymous focus‑group collection, word‑cloud summaries and a color‑coded workbook that tracks objectives as green (complete), yellow (in progress) or red (not started). He said the typical timeline can be either a fall kickoff for a January adoption or a January start for a spring adoption, and stressed the importance of assigning owners and timebound measures to avoid plans that are "put on the shelf." Following the presentation, the board moved and approved a service agreement with Summit ESC to provide strategic‑planning services for the district.
