The Sayreville Board of Education voted unanimously at its April 29 meeting to enter a closed session to discuss personnel matters, a grievance with the Sayreville Education Association, student matters, attorney–client privileged matters and negotiations with the Teamsters.
During the opening of the meeting an unidentified official read the board's public-notice statement, saying, "This public meeting of the Sayreville Board of Education has been established by sending a copy of the public meeting notice to the Home News Tribune and the Star Ledger," and that a copy was posted at the secretary's office. The official identified the Open Public Meetings Act (Chapter 231, P.L. 1975) as the statutory basis for the notice.
Unidentified Speaker 1 read a resolution invoking section 8 of the Open Public Meetings Act, stating the body had determined "such circumstances presently exist" that permit excluding the public to discuss the listed matters. The resolution listed personnel (including agenda items), a grievance identified as Sayreville Education Association number 2024-25:2, student matters, attorney–client privileged matters, and negotiations related to the Teamsters, and said the subjects "shall be made public at such times the need for nondisclosure no longer exists." "This resolution shall take effect immediately," the reader concluded.
Board members then conducted a roll-call vote on the resolution. Each named member—Mister Callahan, Missus Chodkowski, Mister Fernandez, Missus Hernandez, Missus Maldonado, Missus Napolitano, Missus Pabon, Mister Smith and Missus Bloom—answered in the affirmative. The chair declared the resolution adopted and the board moved into closed session.
No further public actions or details about the matters to be discussed in closed session were disclosed during the public portion of the meeting. The board indicated any material that can be released will be made public once nondisclosure is no longer required.
