Public questions policy 5756 and tutoring; student urges moving graduation off campus

Members of the public used the meeting’s public-comment period to raise policy and program concerns and to offer suggestions.

Kim Ledley, who identified herself as a parent and former teacher, questioned information on policy 5756 and said the policy is "not mandated" despite being listed as mandated on the district website. Teresa Focarelli argued for greater parental partnership and urged that schools avoid taking on roles that should rest with families, saying, "Parents are the most important influence in a child's life."

On tutoring, a resident said "there has been... false information going around Facebook... that says that we're only doing tutoring during lunch." Superintendent Dr. Lavey responded that the district offers two forms of tutoring: before-school small-group academies (literacy and math) and Tier 3 one-on-one tutoring that may occasionally be scheduled during a free period, such as lunch, when needed to accommodate a child’s transportation or family constraints.

Student Lynn Reuter recommended moving high-school graduation off school grounds to an arena or larger venue to improve capacity and comfort for out-of-town family members; Reuter said such a change would make graduation a more memorable event for families who travel in.

What the board said - Superintendent Lavey and other members clarified tutoring scheduling options and confirmed that district practice generally prioritizes before- and after-school sessions when possible. - The board acknowledged public concerns about policy readings and encouraged members to flag questions prior to second readings.

The board did not adopt or change policy 5756 during the meeting; the public requested greater transparency and further discussion.
